The Story Behind the Stories
Why did I write these books?
I wrote these books with my daughters in mind (to read when they’re mid to upper teens). Up until then, I hadn’t written anything that I thought they might enjoy. My other books were geared toward adults. I wanted to write a story for them that showed that no matter how challenging life may be, there’s a reason to be hopeful and not give up.
Who was the inspiration for Nina?
The overall inspiration for Nina was to create someone who is as low as they can be in terms of society and then put them under extreme duress. With that in mind, I created a female character who is a peasant living in a pretty awful period (The Dark Ages). She recently lost her father, and, oh, a monster emerges from the forest and terrorizes her village.
What was my biggest takeaway after writing this book?
I had an idea of what this story would be and I had to be malleable to let it evolve. The core of the story remained, but the progression and how I got there evolved. That’s primarily the reason I started to think of Nina Winter as a series. It also influenced the title. She lived in the Dark Ages, but this is her age of darkness.
Who do I think will enjoy Nina Winter and the Age of Darkness?
Readers of historical fiction with a splash of supernatural thrown in. I also think people who like books where the main characters are trapped and need to figure a way out will enjoy it.
